While the discussions on the restriction of the internet and social media in Turkey continue, the Freedom of Expression Association published in its report titled "EngelliWeb 2019: The Invisible Face of the Iceberg" included statistical data on websites, news, social media accounts, and content that are blocked from Turkey. The report was prepared by Istanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Law Lecturer Prof. Dr. Prepared by Yaman Akdeniz and Expert Researcher Ozan Güven.
In the report, while emphasizing that internet-related blocking practices continue as in previous years and that "self-censorship is increasing due to self-removed content", it was stated that as of the end of last year, 408,494 websites from Turkey were blocked.
Access to 130 thousand URL addresses, 7 thousand Twitter accounts, 40 thousand tweets, 10 thousand YouTube videos, and 6 thousand 200 Facebook content as of the end of 2019, as determined within the scope of the DisableWeb 2019 reporting study, was blocked according to Law No. 5651 and other provisions.
In the report, it was said that as we enter the 14th year of access blocking practices, the state's complex internet censorship mechanism continues to operate and develop more vividly and actively than ever before. Again, in the report, in 2020, RTÜK will also use its authority regarding the Internet, and some more restrictive laws in the Law No. changes are anticipated.
