Young Armenian-Turkish Social Entrepreneurs Program

Communities in Armenia and Turkey have had mainly adversarial interactions with each other for decades due to ongoing political tensions between their two governments. The lack of significant positive cooperation has reinforced many deeply negative perceptions that Turks and Armenians have of each other, with animosity particularly notable among youth who have grown up immersed in the narratives of preceding generations while living through the closure of the border and failed reconciliation attempts.

A rising segment of Turkish and Armenian youth are ambitious innovators who aim to use business skills and concepts to drive social change in their communities. These pioneers – social entrepreneurs – face significant challenges within each country, however, relating to a lack of resources, skills, and support for their efforts. As future business and civil society leaders, these diverse individuals can learn much from each other and serve as a bridge of innovative social impact between both societies. HasNa seeks to empower a network of young Armenian and Turkish social entrepreneurs who are dedicated to improving their region together. By supporting this generation of change, HasNa aims to make cooperation a creative, profitable, and sustainable venture.

HasNa and our partners will bring 12 young social entrepreneurs (6 Armenian, 6 Turkish) to Washington, DC in October-November 2012 for four weeks of business, marketing, and conflict resolution training, team building activities, site visits with organizations supporting social entrepreneurship, volunteer opportunities, and networking with their American counterparts. During the program, participants will live in pairs with American host families who reflect the economic, religious and cultural diversity of the country and model the virtue of volunteerism. Following the U.S. portion of the program, participants will return home to implement action plans developed during in Washington, DC. Participants will take part in cross-border study visits to experience the work of their counterparts firsthand, and will participate in events and workshops across both countries to promote youth social entrepreneurship and regional cooperation.
