United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction Disaster Terminology

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction's (UN) Disaster Terminology was created based on the terminology study prepared by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) in 2009. The Terminology Study aims to promote a common understanding and use of disaster risk reduction concepts and to assist agencies, practitioners, and the public in their disaster risk reduction efforts.

An open intergovernmental working group was established by General Assembly Resolution 69/284 UN to work on indicators and terminology for disaster risk reduction. This working group consisting of experts; worked on measuring the progress in the worldwide implementation of the 2015-2030 Sendai Disaster Risk Reduction Framework, developing a range of possible indicators in line with the work of the Inter-Agency Sustainable Development Goals Expert Group and updating the 2009 publication titled "UN International Disaster Reduction Strategy Disaster Risk Reduction Terminology.

The report prepared by the Expert Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction Indicators and Terminology was adopted by the UN General Assembly on February 2, 2017. The 2009 terminology has been in line with the adopted reports and recommendations.
