In the report, important developments in the field of civil society around the world in 2017 were conveyed, and prominent trends were also shared. The report stated that most of these 10 trends push the boundaries of civil society, but there are positive ones among them.
It was stated that attacks on civilian areas became widespread in 2017, even in countries where incidents on this issue were not frequent.
In the foreword, CIVICUS Secretary-General Dhananjayan Sriskandarajah wrote, "We are seeing citizens organize and take action in new and creative ways to defend civil liberties and fight populism. I know we are in difficult times for many in civil society, but I also want this year's report to give strength and inspiration to our members and partners. I hope.”
According to the findings of CIVICUS Monitor, which monitors the civil sphere in 195 countries, the report states that field of civil society has regressed and the culture of democracy is weakening. To reposition intergovernmental organizations as sources of a healthy democracy and re-imagine democracy for a radically changing world, the 2018 Report will focus on democracy.
