Save the Date: International Conference on Freedom of Association

The programme of the International Conference on Freedom of Association, which will take place on 11 and 12 June 2024 in Istanbul under the motto “Strong Civil Society”, has been published. The conference, which will be attended by experts from Turkey, Europe, the Balkans and the USA, will address the global impact of laws and practises regulating freedom of association on the civic space and how civil society is adapting to changing conditions.

Who is on the programme?

During the two-day conference, which will address freedom of association in various dimensions, we will discuss in different sessions how we can tackle the obstacles to the shrinking civic space and how CSOs, a fundamental actor of democracy, can be strengthened.

Feray Salman from the Human Rights Joint Platform, Mandeep S. Tiwana from CIVICUS and Assoc. Prof. Dr Özge Zihnioğlu from the University of Liverpool will present innovative concepts and approaches to tackling the challenges facing democracies in the session titled “New Approaches to Tackling the Challenges Facing Democracies”.

In the session titled "Civil Society Resilience in Difficult Times", Aarti Narsee from the European Civic Forum, Begüm Başdaş from Amnesty International, Marta Pardavi from the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, Dajana Cvjetkovic from CIVILKA from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Peter Čuroš from VIA IURIS from Slovakia will discuss how civil society in different countries and regions has shown resilience in the face of various challenges.

The global impact of freedom of association laws and regulations on civil society activities will be discussed in the session titled "Protecting Freedom of Association: Legal Regulations" with Eszter Harta from the European Centre for Not-for-Profit Law -ECNL, Hanna Hanses from Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association, Thalia Malmberg from the Global NPO Coalition on FATF and Assoc. Prof. Dr Ulaş Karan from Bilgi University.

"Biljana Spasovska from the Balkan Civil Society Development Network (BCSDN), Cornelia Perle from the Democratic Institutions and Civil Society Department of the Council of Europe, Mandeep S. Tiwana from CIVICUS and Selime Büyükgöze from the Mor Çatı Women's Shelter Foundation and the Women Against Violence Europe Network will also participate in the session entitled "Global Civil Society Agenda and the Role of International Organisations".
 

Güneş Engin from TÜSEV, Karla Prudencio from Privacy International, Matthew Mahmoudi from Amnesty International and Vesna Bajšanski-Agić from Techsoup Europe will take part in the session entitled "The impact of new technologies on civil society".
