The International Conference on Freedom of Association Will Take Place on 11 and 12 June in Istanbul Under the Motto "Strong Civil Society"

Civil society organisations from all over Turkey will meet with guests from international civil society at the International Conference on Freedom of Association. The international conference will take place on 11 and 12 June 2024 in Istanbul under the motto "Strong Civil Society".

The conference is being organised as part of the Freedom of Association Monitoring Project, which we are implementing with the support of the European Union and together with the Third Sector Foundation of Turkey (TÜSEV). It will bring together representatives of civil society organisations, academics, experts, activists and policy makers from different parts of the world.

What will we talk about?

The two-day conference will discuss various aspects of freedom of association in particular sessions. We will talk about how we can tackle the obstacles to the shrinking civic space and how civil society organisations, an essential actor of democracy, can be strengthened.

We will also discuss together what we can do to ensure that civil society organisations continue to fulfil their core tasks of protecting human rights and promoting social justice.

At the conference, we will talk about innovative concepts and approaches to address the challenges facing democratic systems around the world, how civil society in different countries and regions is resisting different challenges, how civil society organisations are adapting to a changing environment, and the global impact of freedom of association laws and regulations on civil society activities. Best practises in relation to international organisations and cooperation will also be shared.

The titles of the sessions are as follows:

  • New approaches to addressing the challenges facing democracies
  • Resilience of civil society in difficult times
  • Protecting freedom of association: legal frameworks
  • Global agenda for civil society and the role of international organisations
  • The impact of new technologies on civil society

Detailed information on the programme and the content of the sessions will be announced in the coming days.
