The study began by reviewing news and content about Romani and examples of hate speech against Romani in the media to understand the situation and the need for rights-based journalistic practises.
Then, as part of the workshop programme to strengthen local journalists, independent journalists and civil society organisations producing news, the manifestation of antigypsyism (antiziganism) in public life and in the media, the principles of rights-based journalism, the language of journalism that respects the rights of Romani and the selection of visual material were discussed.
On 27 April 2024, the draft guidelines for Romani rights-sensitive journalism were discussed at the workshop on combating anti-Romani in the media, which was attended by participants of the workshop programme, independent journalists and representatives of civil society organisations, including Romani associations. After collecting ideas and suggestions, the guide was finalised.
