The workshop, to be held as part of the "Say Stop to Antigypsyism" project, aims to prevent hate speech in news and content about Roma in the media, report on the violations experienced by Roma in a human rights-sensitive way and develop counter-narratives.
What is on the program of the workshop?
- Antigypsyism: Conceptual framework; manifestation of antigypsyism in public life and in the media (Moderator: Sinan Gökçen)
- Rights-based journalism: The basic characteristics of rights-based journalism, the understanding of 'newsworthiness', the meaning and function it ascribes to the profession of journalism (Moderator: Faruk Eren)
- The language of journalism and media that respects the rights of Roma: Language use in the production of news and content about Roma (Moderator: Ebru Uzpeder)
- Journalism and visual material that respects Roma rights: Criteria to consider when selecting and using visual material in news and content about Roma (Moderator: Beril Eski)
Who can participate in the program?
The workshop program has been prepared for local journalists, independent journalists, content producers, digital media workers and members and staff of civil society organizations producing news who prefer non-violent language against hate speech, who are willing to improve themselves in this regard and recognize and understand the rights violations that Roma people are exposed to.
When does the program take place?
The workshop program will take place in Istanbul for a full day on Saturday, March 2, 2024. Participants are expected to attend the entire program. Participation is free of charge.
How can you apply?
Participants from outside Istanbul will not be admitted to the program (as accommodation and transportation costs cannot be covered).
Participation in the workshop is limited to 12 people. One person per applying institution will be admitted.
