We continue to discuss different topics of the COVID-19 pandemic with the CSOs. We talked with Elif Ege from Mor Çatı Women’s Shelter Organization regarding increased domestic violence due to the pandemic and what measures should be taken.

Ege said that the domestic violence experienced in the quarantine process would only emerge clearly after the quarantine, and the importance of the online support system was re-understood during the crisis.

“We have once again understood how important the online support mechanisms are,” she said and added that the legal, social and psychological support must be given online during the epidemic.

The language of the video is Turkish.

Stating that the “ALO 183” line supports many problems and violence against women is one of them, Ege said that there should be an active and responsive telephone line working 24/7 for violence against women. She said that they did not except the execution law which came up again with the epidemic and primarily provided remission for sexual violence crimes.

Ege claimed that speeches about the amnesty made women nervous and frightened. Women had called “Mor Çatı” because they felt in danger about the new execution law, Ege said.
