We Attended the Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy

As part of the Freedom of Association Monitoring Project, supported by the European Union and conducted in collaboration with TÜSEV, we participated in the 12th Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy with representatives from 7 supported CSOs.

The Global Forum on Modern Direct Democracy was held in Bucharest, Romania, from May 15-18, 2024. The forum brought together civil society organizations and activists from various countries and regions dedicated to the protection and development of democracy.

The forum began on May 15, 2024, with an opening session at the Romanian Parliament. It continued with sessions held at Revista Theatre and the Faculty of Sociology and Social Work in Bucharest.

The forum discussed topics such as citizens' initiatives, the impact of technology on democracy, youth participation in decision-making processes, the outcomes of referendums and plebiscites, local democracy, civil society responses to anti-democratization, participatory democracy practices, media and democracy, the future of Europe, and regional cooperation.

As part of the forum, we made a presentation on May 17, 2024, in the session "Regulations and Practices for Access to Information." Murat Özçelebi, the coordinator of the Freedom of Association Monitoring Project, spoke about the legislation on the Right to Information in Turkey. During the session, we also shared our experiences with information requests as part of our monitoring and reporting activities.
