As the sub-working group of our association, the Climate Studies Group, we have suggestions against disasters such as floods and fires, which occur in our country between 20 July and 3 August 2021, due to the climate.
Against reducing the predictable effects of these events on the ecosystem:
UN 2030 Global Development Goals, which is our most basic reference point as an association 13. The aim of climate action must be embraced holistically by local and national decision-makers immediately.
- National and local authorities should urgently revise the Strategy Plans and the Climate Action Plans, if any, with the participation of all relevant stakeholders in the Municipal Assemblies, put them on the agenda, and open them for discussion with the public.
- It should support the action plans to be prepared by local and national authorities with a transparent, realistic, and accessible budget and personnel, and periodically share the progress of the destroyed ecosystem with the public.
- The examination of the destroyed areas in the ecosystem should be regularly monitored and reported to the public by the independent local committee to be formed with the participation of all civil stakeholders in the region.
- Following Articles 168 and 169 of our Constitution, we call on the national authorities to implement this law, so that the burned forests are not used for other purposes and these areas are re-forested by the General Directorate of Forestry.
- Local governments must urgently complete an integrated and participatory climate action plan.
- To strengthen resilience against climate-related hazards and natural disasters, climate action, and ecological literacy training should be given as an elective in primary, secondary and higher education and topics such as climate change and global warming should be added to the curriculum of life studies and science courses.
- It should be determined within the framework of the needs analysis with the participation of the citizens, the local people, who will be affected by the supports to be made in the regions determined as the disaster area.
- Policies should be determined by considering the needs of different vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, the disabled, and women, who have been affected by natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and fires, and necessary steps should be taken in this direction.
- By the rights-based approach, animal rights should be given importance and action should be taken with the awareness that animals are living things.
- Due care should be taken to realize the 11th Sustainable Cities and Communities objective of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
- In the context of the International Conventions of which Turkey is a signatory, monitoring studies should be carried out involving all stakeholders of the Civil Society.
- Social media posts prepared as active citizens should be shared within the framework of a certain strategy. It is extremely important that the information shared during the disaster is confirmed and shared.
- It is announced to the public.
