Power Stories “Those Waiting for the Light” meets its audience in Izmir after Adana

Under the title Power Stories “Those Waiting for the Light”, we are travelling to Izmir to hear the inspiring stories of four women from the civic space. The meeting will take place at the invitation of the Mutlu Olalım Projesi on Saturday 14 September between 19:00 and 21:30 at the Gençlik Tiyatrosu in Izmir's Kültür Park and we will hear stories about how the light enters through cracks.

Why "Those Waiting for the Light?"

Leonard Cohen said: “Forget perfection. There is a crack in everything. “The light enters from there”

At our meeting we will hear four stories that touch on different stages of the lives of four women who made their wounds blossom despite difficulties, impossibilities and all those who said “it can’t be like this”. We will experience how the light penetrates through the cracks.

We look forward to welcoming civil society workers, volunteers and anyone who is curious about the stories of civil society to our meeting.

Whose stories will we hear?

Muhal Leventeli İkikardeş: Someone who has made an issue of the inequalities due to the class she was born into and has made advocating for rights a profession in order to create a more just and liveable world. The daughter of Havva, who learnt during her work as a lawyer that there are different ways to fight for rights and who came to this path through knitting solidarity. She loves her family, she loves her friends, who are her family. She talks a lot, she tells a lot. What she tells is loved, her friends never silence her. That's why she keeps on talking.
Filiz Sakallı: When she realised how old she was getting and what she had missed in life, she set off with the thought “Go on the road, the road will appear to you” to travel from village to village with a minibus full of books and tell stories to women and children. To achieve her goal, she trained as a theatre director and storyteller. Just when she thought she had her life ahead of her, she was confronted with the reality of the earthquake. She continues her journey with the aim of reaching more women and children with her efforts to establish a storytelling theatre house in Hatay.
Derya Altay: A traveller with a heart... Travelling from one place to another, holding on to the red string of stories to get to know herself, she presents the pearls of truth she finds about life in the pockets of those who listen to her stories. Her favourite thing in life is to share her experiences with reality.
Özlem Arman: In her project "Mutlu Olalım" (Let's Be Happy), she has been organising various activities for children in state and university hospitals in İzmir for 23 years, not only physically but also mentally, and she meets the needs of the children and their families.

What are Power Stories Meetings?

Power Stories is the name for our meetings where we tell and listen to our own stories. As civil society workers, volunteers and enthusiasts, we come together for storytelling. At Power Stories", we hear first-hand real stories that have emerged in different channels of the civic space, reflect together with the storytellers' stories, and talk about how we can move forward together on the difficult paths that lead to change.
