Purposes and the Way of Work
The goal of Climate Alliance is to protect the global climate. From their perspective, this includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions to a sustainable level in the industrialized countries of the north and protecting the rainforests in the southern part of the planet. Their partnership with indigenous people means that they support their goals.
These goals are to enable them to enjoy fundamental rights as human beings and to live and work in their natural environment according to their own development concepts. Member municipalities take responsibility for specific purposes, fields of activity and measures as members of the alliance. This voluntary commitment is expressed in the Climate Alliance Manifesto (1990) and the Climate Alliance Declaration (2000).
Membership and Membership Requirements
Regional authorities within Europe that adopt the Climate Alliance Manifesto and organizations established by the indigenous people of the Amazon and other rainforests can become members of the alliance. Municipalities, federal states and non-governmental organizations with a population of less than 5000 can be limited members. Limited members have the right to participate in the activities of the alliance and to receive information about these activities. The board of directors evaluates the written membership application and makes a decision.
