About the panel:
While the censorship practices of authoritarian states on the internet and social media are increasing all over the world, international social media platforms used by many journalists and activists are accused of submitting to the policies of these states, sometimes even suppressing opposition voices without even a request from the governments to remove content. In the past years, Facebook Inc. It has been documented that many platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, Google, YouTube, Venmo, Wikipedia, and Zoom, including the company, blocked hundreds of non-violent accounts, shares, and hashtags. While tech giants often say such blocking is a bug in their algorithms, many journalists say the platforms haven't done enough to break the bias against true news. Some revelations from Silicon Valley last year also confirm this view. In addition, many studies have proven that false news or sensational news that triggers emotions spread much faster than regular news on these platforms, whose revenue models are based on frequent and long-term retention of people's attention. What should journalists and human rights activists demand, and by what means, to support the dissemination of truth and truthful news from tech giants?
*Panel language will be Turkish.
