On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, environmental organizations from various provinces in Turkey reiterated their call for a gradual phase-out of existing coal-fired power plants by 2030.
17 institutions that have been fighting coal for years in provinces such as Muğla, Kahramanmaraş, Çanakkale, Antalya, İzmir, Denizli, Sivas, Adana, Balıkesir, Bursa, Eskişehir, Hatay and Karaman shared their demand for a "Fair Phase-out of Coal: Target 2030" in a statement.
The statement said that due to coal mining and coal-fired power plants, people in the region had to either leave their villages and lose their land or go down the mine.
The statement listed the demands for a fair phase-out of coal as follows:
- Existing coal plants should be phased out by 2030, starting today.
- Permits for new coal-fired power plants and coal mines should be revoked without exception.
- Coal mine expansions should be stopped.
- Coal exploration should be stopped.
- All workers who work in coal mines and thermal power plants should be supported with programs that protect their personal rights and their future.
- Implement rehabilitation programs for all affected ecosystems and populations to address the severe ecological degradation in coalfields and the resulting collapse of human health and local economies.
- To build a crisis-resilient society, policies should be developed that prioritize the public interest and science rather than corporate interests.
- The calling institutions have also launched a petition on komursuz2030.org for those who wish to support the campaign.
