There are many topics that the COVID-19 pandemic reveals, and one of the important agendas while talking about the spread of the epidemic is prisons. We talked with Berivan Korkut from Civil Society In The Penal System in the aspect of prisons.
According to data from the Ministry of Justice in January 2020, in Turkey, there are 355 prisons and there are more than 290 thousand people in those prisons. Also, it’s known that the occupancy rate is further above the capacity. It’s mentioned if the pandemic spreads to the prisons the results will be uncontrollable.

Korkut said if the coronavirus epidemic spreads to the prisons it will lead to a humanitarian plight. She stated that the measures to be taken by the Ministry of Justice will be inefficient if the number in prisons is not reduced urgently.
