
While the main theme of this year's awards is ‘Elevating Humanity’, the projects to be proposed are expected to question existing systems and bridge divides. The projects that will apply for the award can be under the titles of ‘Technology for Good’, ‘Climate and Social Justice’, ‘Strengthening Connections between Citizens and Government’ or ‘Increasing Social Resilience’. This year, five different categories will be awarded:
- Individual Award - for individuals who have made a significant difference in their communities through innovative thinking and creative interventions.
- Organisation Award - For organisations that have made a difference through creative ways of working and have made a positive contribution to society through collective efforts.
- Youth Award - For young innovators who have made a difference with their inspiring creativity and innovative initiatives.
- Brave Philanthropy Award - For individuals or organisations that have demonstrated bold and innovative approaches that promote fair and equitable financial partnerships.
- Community Award - For individuals, groups or organisations that bring the community together to address local issues and achieve development.
Who Can Apply?
Anyone who has developed an innovative product, service or process and wants to create change in the field of social justice and civil rights can apply for the award. Applications can be made in English, Arabic, French or Spanish.
Support for social change
The awardees will receive a grant of USD 4500 and will also have the chance to promote their projects on international platforms. Award winners will also receive full scholarships to attend the Innovation Gathering in May 2025 and the International Civil Society Week in Bangkok in November 2025.
About the Award
Inspired by the struggles of Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel, the award recognises individuals and organisations that develop creative solutions in line with the principles of social justice, freedom and collective action. Launched in 2004 by CIVICUS and organised to support the creative power of civil society worldwide, the Nelson Mandela - Graça Machel Innovation Awards celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.
