Who is Dicle Koğacıoglu?
She is one of the pioneers in understanding the importance of gender in this field, making important contributions to the field with her studies in the sociology of law in Turkey.
After graduating from Boğaziçi University, Department of Sociology, she continued her doctoral studies in sociology and women's studies at Stony Brook University (SUNY Stony Brook).
She worked as a research assistant in the international project titled "Constitutional Law and the Modernization of Political Institutions in the Muslim Middle East" between 1997-98. In the same year, she took part in the “Freedom of Expression in Turkey” project of Human Rights Watch (HRW) as a consultant and translator. She returned to Boğaziçi University in 1999 and worked as a lecturer in the Department of Sociology.
She continued her postdoctoral research at Columbia University and Brown University Pembroke Center for Women's Studies between 2002-2004. Dicle Koğacıoğlu, who started working as a faculty member at Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in 2005, made significant contributions to the development of Cultural Studies undergraduate and graduate programs and gender studies.
Being one of the important names of the feminist movement in Turkey, Koğacıoğlu continued her work as an active member of organizations such as Amargi and We Support Each Other(Birbirimize Sahip Çıkıyoruz).
Since 2010, Sabancı University Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has been holding an annual essay award competition in memory of Dicle Koğacıoğlu.
